Academic Folk Choir of the AMDFA - Plovdiv, Bulgaria
The Academic Folk Choir of the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts - Plovdiv is Bulgaria's only student`s folklore choir, founded in 1972.
The choir has a repertoire with a very wide range - from authentic folk songs to polyphonic arrangements, original pieces, composed with avant-garde artistic technics, ancient orthodox vocal music etc.
With its extremely high artistic level the ensemble is equal in its technical and artistic possibilities with several professional choirs.
Many works by the composers Ivan Spasov, S. Mutafchiev, A. Diamandiev, K. Stefanov, N. Stoykov, N. Kaufman, A. Naumov, Kr. Kyurkchiyski etc. were written and dedicated to the Academic Folk Choir, which also performed their premieres. Therefore the choir became the ancestor of the phenomenon "new wave folk", characterized by the specific intonations and metrical rhythms embedded in the works by the bulgarian composers, the enrichment of folk music with modern artistic technics, as well as the high professionalism of interpretation. The successes of the choir in numerous concerts in the country and abroad are outstanding.
The reviews of the foreign music critics about the choir are reflecting the original style of singing and its compelling art that "goes beyond the notion of the Bulgarian folk song."
The choir has won prestigious awards and prizes: from 5th World Choir Games in Graz, Austria (2008), the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, the Ministry of Culture and Radio FM +; Grand Prix for Choral music, Austria (2011).
It has released four CDs. Principal conductor of the choir is Prof. Dr. Kostadin Buradzhiev.
